Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Personal FTP software work?

A: To send any file using FTP and download links, first, click the 'Personal FTP' icon on your desktop. You will see the upload screen.

Click 'Add' and browse to the files you want to upload.

Click 'Upload All', and all files will be uploaded.

A new email will then open with the download links displayed. Address and send.

Q: How do I access the setup screen?

A: After installing Personal FTP Software, there will be a 'Poingo Preferences' desktop icon. Click the icon to open the setup screen. Then click the 'FTP Settings' tab. After entering your settings, be sure to use the 'Test' buttons to verify the settings. You may then use the 'Go to FTP Site' button to navigate to the site using Windows Explorer.

Q: You mention that, with a subscription to FTP Webspace I will receive one free subdomain and one free domain. What is the difference between subdomain and domain?

A: You can use a domain or a subdomain (or both) to access your webspace.
A subdomain looks like this: 'subdomain.poingo.com'.
A domain looks like this: 'yourdomain.com'.

When you subscribe, you will be asked for your preferred subdomain name. Once set up, this will be your quickest way to access your webspace. Depending on your usage, you might not even need a domain.

If you decide that you want a domain, you can do this later. First, start a search to see what domains are available by visiting DomainSearch.com at http://www.domainsearch.com. When you have selected an available domain, notify Poingo by email at info@poingo.com and we will register the domain and target it to your webspace.

Q: How do I access my webspace once I have a subdomain or domain in place?

A: It depends what you are trying to do.

If you are using FTP to upload or download files, use FTP software or Windows Explorer with this type of address:
ftp.subdomain.poingo.com or ftp.domain.com

If you want to access a website hosted on your webspace, use your browser and use this type of the address:
http://www.subdomain.poingo.com or http://www.domain.com

It is recommended that you name the home page of your website 'index.html'.

Q: Can I create folders within my webspace?

A: Definitely. When you have the webspace opened in Windows Explorer, left-click on a blank area of the right side of the screen to select the webspace. Then click File/New/Folder. A new folder will appear in the webspace. Right-click it, select 'Rename' from the drop-down menu, and rename the folder.

Q: Can I use Personal FTP software to upload files I wish to archive or backup on the webspace, without using a new email with the links?

A: Yes. To upload any file(s), click the 'Personal FTP' icon on your desktop. You will see the upload screen. Click 'Add' and browse to the files you want to upload. Click 'Upload All', and all files will be uploaded. A new email will then open with the download links displayed. If you were just using the upload for archival or backup purposes, simply close the newly-opened email without sending.

Q: Do I have to use Personal FTP Webspace in conjunction with Personal FTP Software, or can I use a different web server?

A: You can use any web server to which you have rights, i.e. username and password. We can 't comment on the privacy aspect, of course. If you already have a dedicated web server or account, ask your service provider for the settings to enter in the Personal FTP setup screen.
